District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2018-19

Rotary Club: Del Mar

Project Title: Marine Safety Center

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The grant of $1,000 partially defrayed project development costs, such as travel, consultations, architectural services, printing, etc. associated with the development of the proposed Marine Safety Center (MSC) at Rosarito Beach, Baja California, Mexico.

2. How many people benefited from this project? The project covered pre-development expenses of a project that will serve +/- 800,000 per year

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The Rosarito Beach Ocean Lifeguard Agency is the principal beneficiary of the project (see above), and the follow-on project to actually build a Marine Safety Center (MSC) at Rosarito Beach where some 800,000 beachgoers congregate each year.

If we succeed in raising funds for the envisioned project, the MSC will improve monitoring of +/- 800,000 beachgoers and shorten ocean rescue and medical response times. Safe beaches lead to beachgoer confidence that spurs additional visits that generate greater investment and employment in Mexico's tourism sector.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Mostly Two, the Project Managers from the U.S. and Mexican Rotary Clubs.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Worked with Rosarito Beach Lifeguards, U.S. ocean lifesaving agencies, the City of Rosarito Beach, the Rotary Club of Las Playas de Rosarito, the Rotary Club of Del Mar, and two donor architectural and engineering agencies, to design a Marine Safety Center and develop a fundraising campaign in support of a target build date in the 2020/21 Rotary Year.**

** Our original target build date was in the 2019/20 Rotary Year, but our loss of the site for the project has delayed the build date to the 2010/21 Rotary year in order to give Rosarito officials time to identify and permit a new location.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

N/A apart from agencies and businesses noted above.
