Rotary Club: Chula Vista-Eastlake Project Title: Supplies for Thousand Smiles 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? 8 members of our club and some family members traveled to Ensenada. One of our members works in the clinic on a regular basis. The rest of us met up at the hospital in Ensenada and helped the caterer set-up lunch for the doctors and staff. They perform surgeries for children with cleft palettes for free. We had $300 remaining in funds so we made a donation to the 1000 smiles foundation. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 31 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Children and families in Mexico with dental and medical needs that they can't afford. During the weekend that our rotary club served, the following procedures were performed: 2 cleft lips, 3 cleft palettes, 3 grafts, 1 complicated extraction, and 4 ear tube replacements. Patient ages ranged from 6 months to 52 years old. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 8 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. One member worked at the clinic the whole weekend. The rest of us toured the facilities. At the hospital, we made plates of food for the doctors and staff and brought it to them in the break room. They didn't want to come to where we had the food set-up because they would have to take their scrubs on and off. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Thousand Smiles, a 501(c)3 foundation, provides free maxillofacial surgery as well as general dentistry to children from impoverished families in Mexico. The organization runs clinics once a quarter at their permanent medical facilities in Ensenada. 7. Income
