Project Title: Youth Programs


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Grant was used to fund & expand Youth Exchange, 3rd Grade Dictionaries, RYLA, LEAD & literacy program/DEEP. Sponsored 2 students for Youth Exchange Camp for summer of 2019. In October-2018 we distributed dictionaries to 1,000+ 3rd Grade students in 14 elementary schools in SE San Diego. Sponsored 4 students for 2019 RYLA program. Sponsored a LEAD team (2 students) from Knox Middle school-October 2018. Funded DEEP's Summer Readers, Future Leaders (150 students) literacy program.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Approx 1,200

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Students attending elementary, middle & high schools in Southeast San Diego. The benefits & impact of the projects was significant and is on-going. Reading, writing and homework skills improved for 1,00+ 3rd Graders. Candidates for in the Youth Exchange Program are required to be members of their high school Interact Club, as a result, Interact membership and involvement increased. Participation & # of Interact service projects also increased. The DEEP Summer Literacy project helped to improved reading levels and addressed the literacy loss experienced by many students during school/summer breaks because they don't keep up with regular reading. The Rotary Area of Focus met by these projects is Education.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Club members participated in the interview & selection process for the Youth Exchange & RYLA programs. Visited 14 elementary schools to distribute dictionaries to 3rd Graders. Members visited every classroom (39)and showed students how to use the dictionary and talked about Rotary's 4-Way Test, its meaning & importance. 14 elementary schools. Members also volunteered as readers for one of the sessions.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

No cooperating organization was involved. We partnered with the San Diego Club (33) to jointly interview and select the RYLA & Youth Exchange participants. As a result we supported/sponsored a total of 16 students from Lincoln & Morse HS for RYLA and a total of 3 YE students.
