Rotary Club: Poway-Scripps Project Title: Mock Trial Program 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The Mock Trial Program is a country - wide program that allows high school students to learn and participate in a trial. The students participate as attorneys, witnesses, bailiff and clerk on both Prosecutor/Plaintiff or Defense positions. San Diego Judges and Lawyers judge and score the teams in courthouse downtown in the evenings. Students are enhanced in their ability to think critically, communicate effectively and work as a team, as well as what it takes to work with the legal professionals in the Judicial System to understand the Constitution and the Bill of Rights critical to justice in our country and ultimately the world. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Overall the project benefited the near 600 high school participants in the San Diego County High School Mock Trial competition and directly the finalist in the Poway and Scripps Ranch High Schools 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The program is one of our legal community’s premier opportunities for the 477 entry students to learn about the American Legal Justice system, the Constitution and the rule of law. Students from our club schools have been prepared for the next stage of their training in the judicial process as they move onto colleges for additional education in the pursuit of justice. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 1 from Poway-Scripps Rotary 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. As the Head Attorney Coach Kristin Rayder, along with her teacher and parent coaches, provided over 405 hours of legal coaching (see attached listing) in legal protocol to the students at the school at lunch every Tuesday and Thursday after school from September 18th to February 23. She also met on numerous Saturdays from November 10 to February 23 as they neared trial time. This also included coordinated conference with participating Judge Gallo. Kristin also organized and transported students, parents and project equipment from high school to high school as well as to the courts downtown for the trial rounds (see attached listing) 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? The Constitutional Foundation - oversees and original organizers of the Mock Trial Program and San Diego Superior Court and San Diego County Bar Association 7. Income
