District Grant Final Report

District 5010

2019-20

Rotary Club: Homer-Kachemak Bay

Project Title: Loans to Kiva businesses

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Our Club received a Matching Grant of $500 from District 5010, which along with the Club's donation of $1,000, provided a total of $1,500 for KIVA micro credit loans. The Coordinator for this project managed the allocations of the loans and reported that 20 micro credit loans were provided for this money. The overall default rate for these loans is under 2%. Most of the allocated money is currently being used to fund projects or has already been repaid. All the information is detailed on the KIVA website for our Club's account. Our club focuses on small businesses that are owned by women in developing countries. Please note that the total funds were $500 more than we stated in our Grant application.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Minimum of 20

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries were individuals from many countries that requested small business loans. These individuals do not have access to traditional loan institutions. These loans provide economic development for poor areas around the world.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 6 Rotarians

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

The Rotarian Coordinator of this project determined which projects to support and allocated the funds via the KIVA website. The International committee for our Club, about 5 active Rotarians, gave thoughts and advice on the types of businesses they wanted to support - mostly women owned businesses in developing countries.

The Project Coordinator also gave a workshop to the RYLA student conference, early in March in Homer, about KIVA and showed how to select projects and to donate funds.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

KIVA is the organization which allocates micro credit loans to many businesses all over the world. Our Club works with KIVA through their comprehensive website that lists all the projects that need funds.
