Rotary Club: Anchorage Project Title: United Way 90% by 2020 Back on 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? 90% Graduation by 2020 is a communitywide initiative that was built on the premise of child-centered support—from birth through grade 12. Partnerships were forged to provide the right community-based support to the right child at the right time, complementing the academic work of Anchorage School District (ASD), in hopes of leveling the educational playing field for children in need and achieving a minimum 90% graduation rate. Significant progress has been made to address the different stages of a child’s developmental journey over the years: the four-year graduation rate has climbed from 60% a decade ago to 84% in 2019. Anchorage Rotary has generously awarded support for the project to support high school students in this initiative: the Back on Track high school completion program. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Since the program launched in 2016, more than 862 high school students in grades 9-12 have benefited through enrollment in Back on Track daytime and nighttime classrooms during the school year and summer school classes. 351 seniors to date have earned their diploma. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The beneficiaries of Back on Track are struggling 9 – 12 grade students who are not only off-track to graduate, but who are also economically disadvantaged. Additionally, they are those students who need concentrated one-on-one support and require a small learning environment to succeed. 2018-19 School Year & Summer School 270 served total (1 not enrolled) Economically disadvantaged 98% 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 15 Rotarians signed up to volunteer with Back on Track and other ASD high school students in need of support. 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. 1. Diane Fejes spoke about Personal Finances with Back on Track students in October. 2.Rotarian Karen King coordinated an exciting day-long career exploration opportunity at Spawn Ideas for YTF members in November, where they learned how an advertising and marketing agency functions. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Back on Track is a partnership between United Way of Anchorage, Covenant House Alaska and Anchorage School District. Covenant House Alaska in downtown Anchorage hosts the Back on Track classroom during the school year, and they are the employer of the Youth Engagement Specialist and JAG Youth Engagement Specialist who work with students to identify and facilitate students’ wraparound service needs. The latter of the two specialists also trains students in JAG competencies such as job search and preparation skills and attributes of a strong employee. Anchorage School District’s Child in Transition program coordinates the teachers and enrolls the students for the Back on Track school year classroom and summer school. They also provide the daily on-site supervision of the classroom, its teachers and the temporary teacher assistants who are contracted by United Way of Anchorage. The partners work closely on every aspect of the program and meet at minimum monthly on program issues. 7. Income
