District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: Vista

Project Title: Oceanside Youth Development

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

There were four elements to this project:

(1) Elementary School age Reading and Attendance Incentives: we provided library books to Laurel Elementary School and Mission Elementary School

(2) Mentorship Program for Middle School age: we took between 8 and 10 middle school kids to three Mira Costa College tours and a soccer game, a dance recital, and a play (Into the Woods) and then out to dinner. We also took 30-40 kids on each of two separate Camp Pendleton tours which included lunch at Camp Pendleton with the marines.

(3) Middle School age reading incentives: we provided library books to Lincoln Middle School and art supplies to the North County Lifeline after school program, which encourages kids to stay in school and helps with their homework

(4) High School Graduation Incentives: we provided Graduation Leis to high school graduates in the North County Lifeline program in Crown Heights, each lei made with 50 one-dollar bills

2. How many people benefited from this project? 100 middle schoolers (directly) plus all elementary thru high school library users (1000 kids total?)

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Children (K-12th grade) in the Crown Heights area of Oceanside, who were helped with increased literacy and cultural development, leadership skills, envisioning a pathway to attending college, and avoiding gang involvement and to gain the education they need to break the cycle of poverty and violence in this local area.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 20-25

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Each Rotarian participated in a mentorship trip to Mira Costa or Camp Pendleton, getting to know the kids and helping to show them that there's a big, wide world outside of their neighborhood and that there are opportunities for them they may not have realized otherwise.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

North County Lifeline is a non-profit 501c(3) organization that provides on-site counselling and after school programs for kids in the Crown Heights area. They select the high school graduates who receive the leis funded by this grant, and they provide the stay-in-school/after school program for kids from elementary to high school. Laurel Elementary, Mission Elementary and Lincoln Middle Schools selected the books purchased for the school libraries.
