District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: Del Mar

Project Title: Gamru Village School Support

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

This project supports Gamru Village School in Dharamsala, India by providing necessary funds to purchase some new school desks, tables, book shelves, a cabinet and uniform sweaters for the students. The population served is comprised of the children of a poor community of migrant workers.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 145 students, 9 teachers and 2 staff

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Gamru Village School provides high quality, free education to the disadvantaged children of Dharamsala. Most of these students would not be able to attend a government school in India because even though the government schools are "free", there are costs including those for books and uniforms that must be covered for a child to attend the government schools. These student's families do not have the resources to cover these costs. Gamru School serves these students by giving them the gift of truly free education. The teachers and staff have been at Gamru School for multiple years and their dedication is inspiring.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? At least 4: 2 from Del Mar; 2 from Dharamsala.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Dugan and Philippe Lamoise of the Rotary Club of Del Mar visited the school in 2017 and continue to stay connected with both the Principal Meenakshi Sharma and the local Rotarians. They also keep up to date with school projects and developments during the year through direct communication with Ms. Sharma and by Facebook posts. Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Dharamsala provide ongoing. counsel to the school administration.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?
