Project Title: Salvation Army Food Kitchen


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The community center includes a food pantry, community garden, social services center, gymnasium, youth center, meeting spaces for senior nutrition and youth classes and a full-size working kitchen that is still in the works.

In a typical month, The Salvation Army El Cajon Corps provides nearly 1,000 families with food assistance, more than 300 families with government commodities and more than 1,400 lunches to senior citizens, according to the nonprofit organization. The El Cajon Salvation Army assists more than 40,000 people each year.

This was completed in El Cajon California. Our portion focused on the kitchen area of the new building. We helped build out the kitchen. The

The total budget for the project was over $50,000 and our portion was $14,000.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 1000 families benefit from food assistance

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

El Cajon Salvation Army Corps annually with programs including:

Homework center, after-school & youth development programs

* lunch program for kids

Food and clothing distribution & basic needs support

Senior services including Cool Zones

* senior meal program and cooking classes

Back Country mobile response team

* food bank for needy families in the Easy County of San Diego

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 15

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Members volunteer with the food bank and help package and deliver goods our to the community.

Members helped organize and put together some of the food bank's equipment. One Saturday a group of about 15 Rotarians met to assemble storage racks for the food bank. In addition part of that group helped sort and arrange the clothing donation closet.
