District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: Chula Vista

Project Title: College Scholarships

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

A total of 10 graduating high school seniors each received $1,000 scholarships to apply toward their college or university education.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 10

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Ten high school seniors were awarded scholarships. Half received Bill Padelford Scholarships for Academic Achievement, having demonstrated exceptional academic performance as demonstrated by GPA, number of AP courses and written recommendations from faculty. The other half received Joe Rindone Scholarships for Community Service, having demonstrated exceptional involvement in giving back to the community through volunteerism, above average academic performance, and written recommendations from faculty. All recipients submitted compelling personal essays describing their future academic and career plans, and need for financial support.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 8 members formed the scholarship committee

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

The chair of the committee personally worked with guidance counselors at four separate Chula Vista high schools to promote the availability of the scholarships to the student body, distribute and collect applications, obtain copies of student transcripts, and copy and distribute application packets to the other committee members.

Committee members individually reviewed all applications, then met as a whole to rank and choose applicants. Guidance counselors met with the committee during the selection process to provide additional input based on their personal knowledge of the applicants.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

High school guidance counselors helped promote the scholarships to their student bodies, distributed and collect applications, provided academic transcripts to the scholarship committee, and provided additional input to the final selection committee.
