District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: San Marcos

Project Title: Literacy Project

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The San Marcos Rotary Club Literacy Project provides a new book to each first-grade student in the Title 1 schools within the San Marcos Unified School District.

The Title 1 school teachers were contacted to provide the Project Chair with their number of students and classes. An age-appropriate book was selected, ordered and Rotary stickers were printed. A work party was held to sticker, count and separate the books for each participating school.

Pairs of Rotarians signed up to visit each school where they introduced Rotary, read to the students and then provided this new book to each child to keep.

The project took place at six San Marcos schools, in 31 classes during February and early March 2020.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 850

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries were the students who received a new book as well as the teachers, students and Rotarians who experienced the importance of an adult spending time reading to them.

The impact this project made was communicated through the heartfelt cards and letters Rotary received from the students and teachers, as well as the testimonies from the Rotarians who participated. The humanitarian need met was the essence of the focus of Rotary's principles-Literacy and Education and Service Above Self.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 25

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

To be successful and distribute the tasks among new and seasoned Rotarians, this project had club members provide hands-on work by pasting Rotary stickers into the front of each book, and counting and separating the books for each school.

The other important components were setting up the school visits with the teachers and two Rotarians visiting each of the classrooms and reading to kids.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The San Marcos Unified School District was the cooperating agency for this project. Their District office staff provided the contact information for each of the schools while expressing their appreciative support for this annual Rotary project.
