District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: San Diego Coastal

Project Title: Don't Trash Pacific Beach

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The project involved helping Don't Trash PB buy buckets, trash grabbers and customizing the buckets with branding. Don't Trash PB then supplies these buckets and grabbers to the general public and incentivizes people to do trash clean ups through social media campaigns. They also host community clean-ups to spread awareness, clean up the community and encourage neighbors to meet one another and grow community. The San Diego Coastal Rotary Club sponsored organized one of these clean ups on May 16,2020 with club members and guests in attendance.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 300+

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries include all of the residents and visitors of Pacific Beach who can enjoy a cleaner community. This includes our local squirrels, birds and ocean life, who benefit from less plastic and garbage harming their lifestyle and environment. Additionally, the more immediate beneficiaries are Rotarians and guests who attended our clean up event, got to enjoy exercise and getting to know one another better and promote Rotary. Finally, additional beneficiaries will be those who Don't Trash PB supplies with buckets and grabbers to pick up trash independently.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 15

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

San Diego Coastal Rotarians invited friends though personal outreach, as well as internet and social media advertising on Facebook, MeetUp, Instagram and our club's newsletter to our clean up event. The clean up event involved splitting up into groups, and walking down streets and alleys picking up trash. All together participants filled over 40 5-gallon buckets with trash that could have otherwise ended up on our beaches, bay and ocean.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The clean up event was a collaborative event between San Diego Coastal Rotary Club and Don't Trash PB group. Don't Trash PB supplied the buckets and trash grabbers and helped spread word about the event.
