District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: Coronado

Project Title: Missionvale Care Center

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The project activities took place at the Missionvale Care Centre, outside Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The project involved purchasing "marching band materials" and stationery for the children at the Normoyle Primary school on the campus. The project began in August 2019 and ran until now, March 2020.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 100 children

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries are school age children from 5 to 15.

1)They were equipped with instruments for a newly created Marching Band, which caught the attention of an official in the South African National Defence Force.

2)The children were given arts and crafts materials -- it especially helped those in the "remedial" classes as they are not often able to express themselves through speaking.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 11

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians from Coronado Rotary have gone to Port Elizabeth, South Africa on numerous occasions to support the Missionvale Care Centre. The last trip was led by Orit Ostrowiak and enormous support was generated throughout our Club for this incredible place where the poorest of the poor in South Africa are looked after.

One particular area of interest is the primary school, where children do not have basic equipment for sports, art, music etc. This is where we decided to focus our attention for the District Grant, because these are usually seen as "extras" in the general funding, yet are so important for the full development of children.

Two of the members of this trip are now on the Coronado Rotary Board and feel confident that the money is well spent and getting to those that need it most. So active Board involvement and education of our Club at large on Missionvale is another way we support this project.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?
