District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: San Diego Coastal

Project Title: Wildflower Initiative Library

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

We purchased the bookshelves, decor, supplies, and actual new books to build the entire library for the Women's Resource Center in Oceanside. We were supposed to install this library in April, but the pandemic has pushed out the project date by a few months. We will still be installing the library there when they deem it safe to do so. At this point we did buy all the supplies. The books were purchased new per the Center's request given the pandemic, and their request for self help titles for the women at their shelter, which we could not find in our donation pile of books.

Club members will volunteer day-of to install and stock the library, and we will have roughly 10-12 volunteers present to build the bookshelves and organize the 3,000+ books that have been donated for the project.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Eventually, over 100 women and children will benefit once the library is complete.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The Women's Resource Center in Oceanside will be the eventual beneficiary of a new library, though the funds were used by Wildflower Inc, a nonprofit that builds and installs/maintains libraries for local homeless and women/children shelters. Once the library is installed, the women and children at this center, who are there because of leaving an abusive home life, will be able to have a safe space to read, educational programs will be held in the library space built, kids reading times, etc. It will further the needs of literacy and education for women and children

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 3

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

We helped Wildflower purchase supplies. There would have been more rotarians involved in the actual installation of the library had it not been put on hold. Once we get the ok to install as virus fears subside, we estimate over 10-12 members of our club will show up to help install the library shelves, decorate, sort and put the books out, etc.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Women's Resource Center in Oceanside is the one getting the library for their women and children.
