District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: Encinitas Coastal

Project Title: Scholarships for San Carlos

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The Scholarship Program for students in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico during the school year 2019-2020 was managed by the San Carlos Rotary Club, with funding support and oversight from the Encinitas Coastal Rotary Club. The Program distributed monetary awards throughout the year, with the coordinator disbursing tuition payments, monitoring the students' success, meeting with teachers and directors, etc.

2. How many people benefited from this project? The community of San Carlos, Sonora, Mex.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Eighty-one students, the facilitator, the schools, transportation services, various local businesses in San Carlos and others benefited from this program. Making it possible for these students to continue their education is a huge gift to them and their families. Their successful contributions through future employment will ripple through the local economy for years to come. It is a testimony to the impact of fostering basic education and extended educational opportunities. Please look at the complete report of the project submitted as a PDF under the documents tab.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? All of the members of the San Carlos Rotary Club, along with some oversight from the Encinitas Coastal Rotary International Committee and

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Three major fundraisers by the San Carlos Rotary support this effort. For the Carne Asada event, held at the local Primeria, Rotarians partner with the parents of the students and the Director of the school to deliver a day of food, libations and entertainment for the community. Many of the students perform at the event. Rotarians manage the event and the auction. There is some interaction between the scholarship students and the members of the local Rotary during the school year, but the Club members primarily monitor the success of the program through the Coordinator, a paid professional local educator. Marla Elliott, a member of the Encinitas Coastal Rotary Club, met the Coordinator twice during the year, as well as the Director of one of the schools. She also worked with other members of both clubs on this project.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The Encinitas Coastal Rotary devoted one club meeting to developing a better understanding of the needs of the San Carlos community and the work done by the San Carlos Rotary Club. Serendipitously, this year's president of the SC Club, Jan Meyer, was visiting the San Diego area that week and was able to join in the meeting. He arranged his travel schedule so he could personally thank the Encinitas Coastal Rotary for their second year in supporting the Scholarship Program.
