Project Title: Rotary-Smiles Generator


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Due to the relative frequency of hurricane related and other local power outages, the lack of electrical backup during times where clinical and surgical services are being provided can lead to serious medical life-threatening scenario. It is for this reason, both during and after the Rotary Mission projects are being completed, as well as for the community overall, this Matching Grant is developed to provide funds for the purchase, installation, and provision of an electrical backup generator for the local community's outpatient clinical surgical facility used.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

In the process of providing children and patients located in the regions of Mexico with underserved populations afflicted with Facial Cleft deformities, the mission surgeons and nurses of the Rotary-Smiles International Foundation projects Baja-Smiles which include Cabo San Lucas clinics have noted a deficiency of life-saving electrical power backup availability at the sites served.

This project will involve the participation of several Rotary Clubs located in the region of Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos and will be a conjoined project of the Rotary Club of Carlsbad, Rotary Club of Carlsbad High Noon, and the Rotary Club of Los Cabos. Over 20 Rotarian will be participating and this project is estimated to provide benefits for over 8,000 people directly in the 2 years to follow the project completion. Hundreds of children receiving facial cleft repairs along with many families receiving other medical surgical care at this community hospital will benefit from secure power to their operating rooms, clinics, and hospital rooms for years to come during times of power instability to this physical location on the point of the Baja California, Mexico.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Helped to coordinate the purchase, obtain installation engineer electricians, plumbers, concrete workers for platform stabilization, wiring to conduit panels connecting to existing hospital supply routes, crane lift workers and trucking drivers for the placement of the purchased generator. Provide monitoring of equipment and supplies.

Also, Rotarians helped with meal coordination and social interaction at their meetings and host project workers for the care of the clinic.
