District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: Encinitas Coastal

Project Title: COVID Critical Support for CRC

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

A $1,000.00 check for CRC was delivered to Executive Director John Van Cleef on Thursday, April 16th by Encinitas Coastal Rotary co-chairs, Linda Kitchens and Larry Gonzales.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Hundreds of Food-Insecure North County Residents

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Due to the swelling ranks of the food-insecure population in north county San Diego and the closure of several other food distribution projects, the CRC is increasing its efforts to meet the demand. With some donations from grocery stores and restaurants diminished, they sometimes need to purchase supplies from local food banks. In addition to providing food supplies for those in the CRC shelter programs, it serves the basic needs of those who connect through their domestic violence programs or visit their food pantry. Their nutrition programs are still open and actively serving the needs of many “new” participants seeking help due to the Covid-19 crisis.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Members of two Rotary Clubs supported the effort.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Both the Encinitas Coastal Rotary Club and The Encinitas Rotary Club shared discussions with their members about The best way to help their community during the Covid -19 crisis. Each club has an ongoing relationship with the Community Resource Center. Other activities grew from the research for this grant. The Encinitas Coastal Rotary shopped for diapers, personal hygiene products and other hard-to-find supplies as well as basic food items, delivering another $1,000 worth of goods for immediate distribution. They also donated an additional $1,000 for the food pantry and contributed $1,000 to the domestic violence program.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Just a personal note:

We appreciate the opportunity presented by District 5340 to battle the Covid-19 crisis in our North County community. President Paul Abel reached out to several other local clubs to join in this effort. Many thanks to the District, to the Encinitas Rotary Club and to the three other clubs; Del Mar-Solana Beach, Torrey Pines, and La Jolla Golden Triangle, who have also chosen to support the efforts of the Community Resource Center.

Many Thanks!

Marla Elliott, administrator
