District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: Coronado

Project Title: COVID-19 - Coronado Hospital

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The COVID-19 pandemic took the world by storm. All of our lives have been impacted by the spread of the novel coronavirus yet none more so than the health care workers at the frontline of this crisis. Over the past few months, Sharp Coronado Hospital has responded to this emergency with efficiency, preparedness and the utmost care for our patients and employees.

With support from Rotary, and many others in the community, we were able to transform the facility to minimize the risk of virus spread and purchase additional equipment to ensure the highest level of safety for our patients and caregivers. Negative pressure rooms were set up in the hospital for COVID-19 patients, keeping the virus as isolated as possible. Patient monitoring equipment was upgraded and additional Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPRs) and critical protective supplies were purchased for our health care providers.

2. How many people benefited from this project? As of June 10, Sharp Coronado Hospital has tested 2,253 suspected patients with 112 positive COVID-19 test results. During this time, Sharp Coronado has had a daily census of 1 – 10 COVID-19 positive patients. All COVID-19 positive patients have been safely discharged to their families thanks to the excellent care provided. Sharp Coronado employs 650+ team members whose health and safety also benefitted from the facility transformation and additional protective gear.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The COVID-19 pandemic has been unlike anything we have seen in our lifetimes. The reduction of illness spread was crucial in saving countless lives locally, nationally and worldwide. Sharp Coronado Hospital was prepared for an influx of patients with COVID-19 with a secure and sanitary facility, upgraded patient monitoring equipment and increased protective gear. In doing so, we kept our caregivers and patients safe, and reduced the risk of contracting and spreading the virus to the community.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Many Rotarians supported this project by generously donating to our COVID-19 Emergency Fund to help fill the needs during this health crisis.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Due to the risk of spread of COVID-19, the hospital was unable to offer opportunities to participate outside of in-kind and financial support.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Coronado Hospital Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Sharp Coronado, supporting the hospital with supplemental funds for capital projects, upgraded equipment and emergency funds. As the needs from the pandemic became apparent, the Foundation created the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund. With support from Rotary and many other community members, the Foundation team pivoted their fundraising efforts to provide the hospital with critical funds for the preparation of the facility and purchase of additional protective gear.

In support of the COVID-19 Emergency Fund, Coronado Hospital Foundation raised over $430,000, including $225,000 that has already been distributed to the hospital for immediate use.
