District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: Carlsbad

Project Title: COVID1- North County Food Bank

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

As the largest independent hunger-relief organization in San Diego County, the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego and North County Food Bank has a tremendous obligation in the face of COVID-19. Under normal circumstances, the Food Bank distributes 73,000 meals a day and serve 350,000 individuals each month. But now, as thousands in our community face job loss and economic uncertainty, their mission is critical. The Food Bank is seeing and preparing for a dramatic increase in the number of people who are being forced to choose between paying rent and electricity bills or putting food on the table. In March, the Food Bank served over 600,000 individuals and distributed 4 million pounds of food. They expect those numbers to hold or increase over the next 3 to 6 months.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Over 600,000 San Diegans a month will benefit from the Rotary Club of Carlsbad donation.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Beneficiaries include our fellow San Diego seniors, children, working families, military families and those that are recently unemployed or furloughed. Addressing the humanitarian need of food, the Food Bank provides San Diegan families and individuals with nutritious food, hope and dignity.

With our children no longer in school, those students in need are no longer receiving their subsidized breakfast or lunch. The Food Bank has partnered with the San Diego Unified School District to conduct weekly grocery distributions at 12 school sites.

To ensure our seniors, one of the most vulnerable populations right now, are safe, the Food Bank has partnered with organizations to create a call center and food box delivery.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 62 active members contributed. The Community Service committee comprised of 5 members facilitated the decision process. The funds were delivered to the Food Bank by 4 club members.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

To support the project described above, our club's contribution was solely financial. The Food Bank will use the donation to achieve the objective of supporting our community with much needed food supplies.

One of club members, Bob Herrrmann, and his wife, Diane, have a strong relationship with Jim Floros, President & CEO of the San Diego Food Bank. Bob and Diane worked with Jim to facilitate a tour of the North County Food Bank distribution center in San Marcos. This also served as our opportunity to present Jim with $7,000: the $250 District Grant, $750 pledged by the Rotary Club of Carlsbad (RCC) as part of the District Grant, an additional $4,000 from the RCC from the Community Services budget, and two $1,000 donations from individual club members.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?
