District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2019-20

Rotary Club: Chula Vista

Project Title: COVID19-Project Hand

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Project Hand is an Emergency Assistance Food Pantry run by Lutheran Social Services on the campus of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Chula Vista and serves homeless and low income families in the Chula Vista/South Bay Area. The hands-on piece of the project was held on Monday, April 20, 2020. The donation is made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church who purchases the food from the San Diego Food Bank. The volunteers pick up the food at the San Diego Food Bank and then deliver it to Project Hand located on the campus of the church. The activities took place at the San Diego Food Bank and then on the campus of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Over the next several months 1,250 to 1,500 people will benefit from the donation from Rotary.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The total donation of $1,750 will purchase 17,500 lbs of food which translates into 1,250 to 1,500 boxes of food that will be distributed to the homeless and low income families over the next several weeks. The distribution is done thru Lutheran Social Services on the campus of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Due to the impact of COVID-19 the demand for food assistance has increased dramatically.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 3 Rotarians plus the daughter of a Rotarian.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

This project doesn't require a large volunteer base; only 4 volunteers needed to supplement those from Lutheran Social Services. Rotarians Chris Lewis (past President) and Gary Bryant picked up and loaded the food at the San Diego Food Bank. Food delivered to St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Chula Vista. Two additional Rotary volunteers, David Hoffman (past President) and Nora Johnson (daughter of Lisa Johnson, past President) helped off load the food at the church. This isn't a one-time project. A second pick-up and delivery is scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2020 and this will be an ongoing project from time-to-time as needed. Will rotate Rotary volunteers.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Lutheran Social Services runs the program and distributes the food with its volunteers. St. Mark's Lutheran Church provides the funding (thru donations), orders and picks up the food with the additional volunteers (such as Rotary) which they put on a rotation basis with church volunteers. Food is picked up about every two weeks. Food is currently being purchased at $.10 a pound. Purchases will be made over the next several weeks.
