MCV Teacher Housing Final Report (P-3285)

The Malawi Children’s Village (MCV) Teacher Housing Project was funded with $2000 coming from Anchorage East Rotary and $2000 from District 5010. The USA MCH non-profit Foundation received the $4000 in funding in August of 2020. The Rotary grant of $4000 was combined with $16,000 in funds previously raised by the Foundation. Construction started in November of 2020. At that time the site was selected, blocks made, and doors and windows were constructed. The rainy season starts in December and continues till about the end of February. No construction occurred during the rainy season. In March of 2021 Covid did have some impact on laborers, but construction did commence again. The housing duplex will be completed in June of 2021 and occupancy will be by June 30, 2021. .

2. How many people benefited from this project? There are approximately 450 students enrolled in the MCV School.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The duplex will house two teachers and their families. Housing on site will save teachers having to travel 6 to 10 miles by bicycle. On site housing will assist with teacher access and retention

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 5

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

The Anchorage East Rotary International Service Committee considered several projects for the 2020-2021 Rotary year. Some projects could not be accomplished due to Covid pandemic restrictions. In a prior year the AER had invited the Malawi Children's Village (MCH) to make a presentation at a weekly meeting. As a result, the Committee reached out to MCH to see if Rotary could assist with a project that could be accomplished during the pandemic. This involved some planning and consideration. Then, after consideration the Committee recommended the proposed partner project to the AER Board. The Board approved the MCH project and matching funds were obtained from the District.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The MCH Foundation provided additional funding for the Teacher Housing project and directed construction through on-site staff and hired laborers. A Foundation Board member kept AER advised of the project status.
