Rotary Club: Ketchikan (The First City) Project Title: Music Moves 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The Music Moves project is a partnership between Susan Doherty, the Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough and First City Rotary to install a musical instrument park at Rotary Beach, just south of the village of Saxman on Revillagigedo Island. Susan Doherty originated and has championed the project, a memorial to her son Patrick, who was a musician in Ketchikan. Seven Harmony Park outdoor musical instruments are installed on a site overlooking the Tongass Narrows and Gravina and Pennock Islands. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Residents of and visitors to Ketchikan, Saxman and the surrounding area. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The beneficiaries are all residents of the island, about 14,500 people, and visitors (before the pandemic, totaling annually over 1 million people). The Music Moves park provides a unique experience for families to make music in a lovely setting on the island. It is intended also to attract visitors to the site, drawing them from the crowded downtown to a beautiful scenic area. The humanitarian need is to be able to make and appreciate music, bringing together family and friends to do so. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 30 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Rotarians, with Sue and other friends of the Club, prepared and leveled the site, dug footings for the instruments with in-ground mounts, poured a 6" concrete slab for a 20 foot diameter circle and walkway, mounted the surface instruments, did the final finishing of the site, erected a memorial plaque, and organized the June 19 dedication of the site. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? The Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council organized the many individual financial contributions to the project. Susan Doherty helped fundraise, participated in every work party, and was indefatigable and inspirational in her work to make the Music Moves park a reality. The Ketchikan Gateway Borough provided the site itself and was helpful in many phases of the project. 7. Income
