Rotary Club: Juneau-Gastineau Project Title: North Douglas Shelter 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The original grant project was to complete a picnic shelter at Outer Point on North Douglas. However, it was not possible to move forward with that project, so the grant was pivoted to provide funding to Trail Mix, Inc. Trail Mix, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to be the steward of a safe and enjoyable Juneau Trail System by bringing people and resources together for trail planning, building, maintenance and activities. Trail Mix will use the grant funds to improve the Lena Point trail and to build a new bench. They are removing hazardous sections of the boardwalk and replacing them with gravel. Trail Stewards will clear away rocks, roots, and boardwalk to create the new gravel trail. Repairs will be made to bridges and staircases on the trail. See the work plan document provided. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Potentially thousands of people will benefit – locals and visitors. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The Lena Trail is open to the public, and therefore potentially all of Juneau will benefit from the trail improvements. Additionally, there are many visitors to Juneau who will benefit as well. The trail system in Juneau has always been a wonderful resource for locals and visitors alike. During the past two years while the entire world has been dealing with COVID-19, it has become clear that the physical and mental health benefits of outdoor exercise are critical to personal well-being. The repairs, maintenance and upgrades to the Lena Point Trail will enable users to safely utilize the trail and enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of hiking in this beautiful area. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 5-10 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Gastineau Rotarians coordinated with Trail Mix to determine which project the club should adopt this year. Five to ten club members participated in training provided by Trail Mix, where they reviewed the work plan, learned to use the tools, and learned safety procedures. After training, the Gastineau Rotarians will volunteer during this upcoming summer to accomplish the trail repairs and upgrades as outlined in the workplan. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Trail Mix, Inc. is the non-profit organization which received the grant funds. Trail Mix staff and volunteers will provide the training to the Gastineau Rotary Club, will procure the necessary materials, and will provide the expertise for the trail improvements. 7. Income
