Rotary Club: Homer-Kachemak Bay Project Title: Winston Ajakaye scholarship 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The project was a scholarship to help a former Rotary exchange student get his college education off the ground. We gave $5,000 to Winston Ajakaye for his first semester at Kachemak Bay Campus, University of Alaska Anchorage. His first semester was the fall of 2020, and the money was given early in the semester. Many individual Rotarians continue to be involved in Winston's life by providing him with work, housing and mentoring. 2. How many people benefited from this project? One directly, but potentially many more. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Winston Ajakaye was the direct beneficiary, but our club and community also benefited by continuing our relationship with Winston, who is from Lagos, Nigeria. We will never know how many people will ultimately be helped by Winston's education. He has told our club on more than one occasion he hopes in the future to be the benefactor instead of the beneficiary. Plus, as Rotarians, we believe peace and goodwill throughout the world is accomplished person to person, and the scholarship was one way of showing that. The humanitarian need that was met was higher education — plus building a bridge to better understanding with someone from a different culture. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? About an dozen 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. At least three different Rotarians helped Winston with housing; several more provided Winston with odd jobs which provided him with money for the semester; at least one provided regular mentoring and help with his college classes. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Because of our club's relationship with the Alaska Beauty Peony Cooperative Farms, Winston was able to get work during the peony-growing season and after the harvest. This provided him with insights into a local industry that he might not otherwise have ever received. 7. Income
