District Grant Final Report

District 5010

2020-21

Rotary Club: Anchorage South

Project Title: 3rd Grade Dictionaries

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

We paid for and delivered 2765 dictionaries to every 3rd grader in Anchorage.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 2765

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

All 3rd graders throughout the city benefited. Our primary goal is to help increase literacy in our community. Students spend grades k-3 learning letter sounds and word combinations. If they dont have a firm grasp on their vocabulary by grade 4, they are often left behind in other subjects, that utilize word problems to teach.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 18

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

the primary function of the Rotarians is to present the dictionaries to the classes and show them how to find valuable information throughout the book. Unfortunately we were not able to do our classroom presentations this year due to Covid. Our Rotarians still ordered the books, placed out Anchorage South Rotary stickers in them, and delivered them to the school offices.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Elks lodge does provide books to schools in Eagle River, and the Dictionary projects sells us the books for a great price. We also had cooperation with Anchorage Midtown Rotary.
