District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2020-21

Rotary Club: Del Mar

Project Title: Rotary Youth Programs

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Please note that permission from the District Grants Committee was received for a reallocation of these grant funds from district youth programs held virtually at very little cost to two alternative programs: 1) $1,500 for Mira Costa College Foundation scholarships awarded to students in need selected by the Foundation, and $900 to partially cover expenses for workshops held by the Sunset High School Interact Club.

The workshops held by Sunset High School students were for children and involved specific times set aside for students to come into Sunset High School and work on art, community service projects such as blanket making, painting, hygiene kits and clothing drives to help out less fortunate children in the San Diego area from Chula Vista to Oceanside.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 343

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Three students attending Mira Costa college were each awarded a $500 grant. These awards allowed the students to stay in school and to continue their college learning experience.

The workshops and projects held by the Interact Club benefitted 40 students and over 300 children not at the school. The interact Club students were able to help those in need in their community and felt proud of the work they accomplished in teaching children new skills as well as the concept of community service. The children beneficiaries had an early introduction to serving their community through the work they did to assemble kits and make blankets for those less fortunate. They also had the valuable opportunity to be with high school students and to learn from them.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 4

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

For the Mira Costa College Foundation, Rotarian Janice Kurth arranged the grants with the Foundation to insure that students in need would be recipients.

The Interact Club workshops were facilitated by a teacher and one Rotarian, Chris Stewart. The Rotarian facilitated self esteem building exercises, organizational skills, counseling around depression and or anxiety from quarantine of Covid-19, family and peer guidance as well as participation in making of blankets and hygiene kits.

Rotarians Larry Cook and Dugan Lamoise worked on reallocating funds to appropriate projects and on the grant itself.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The Mira Costa College Foundation selected the students who received the grants and managed the financial payments associated with the grant funds.

For the Interact Club workshops, participating organizations included Sunset High School, the Community Resource Center, Stand Up For Kids and the Red Cross.
