Rotary Club: Vista Project Title: Reading is Fun Literacy Projec 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Ordinarily this project involves club members reading in person in each first grade class in the Vista Unified School District and giving each student their very own copy of the book to take home and share with their families. This tradition was not possible this year due to COVID closing the schools for virtually all of the school year. However, we persisted and adapted. Through the coordination of two club members who are also associated with the Vista Teachers' Association, club members were recorded reading the books and the videos were shown to first grade classes by the teachers. Each teacher then distributed the books to the students to take home. Another addition to the project this year was the opportunity to enhance two school libraries through the project. Because of an ordering glitch, the vendor for our books gave us a significant discount on this year's purchase. That left almost $800 in the project budget after the books were purchased. With the approval of district matching grant leadership, we were able to provide two $400 mini-grants to elementary schools in high poverty areas in the district, to enhance their school library holdings for early grade students. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Approximately 1,466 first grade students received books and countless other students will benefit from the school library enhancement portion of the project. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? All first grade students in VUSD were impacted by this project. They each received their very own copy of the book that was read, to take home and share with their parents and siblings. For many of the students this was the first book that they have personally owned. Early literacy is a primary goal for the Vista Unified School District and this project contributed to enhancing students' interest and skill development in reading. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Approximately 12 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. 1) Two club members coordinated the entire project including choosing and ordering books, coordination with schools, arranging for members to make reading videos, communicating with teachers regarding project implementation, coordinating delivery of books to schools, and choosing the two schools to receive library enhancement grants. 2) Several club members made book reading videos to be used in the first grade classrooms. 3) Five club members assisted in delivering books to schools. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Vista Unified School District assisted in planning and implementation of the project. Vista Teachers' Association provided major logistical support. 7. Income
