Rotary Club: La Mesa Project Title: Emergency Food Distribution 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? `1. As schools remained closed, due to the pandemic, children who relied on school lunches were left without that food safety. Schools scrambled to meet the need, but were overwhelmed. They came to City Hope and La Mesa Rotary to see if we could help. We set up a once-a-week food distribution where, depending on family size, families were given about a week’s worth of staples; breakfasts, lunches, and some dinners. We also provided diapers. Families were given four to seven bags of food valued at $13 to $15 each. Food was purchased weekly. The distribution was done at Spring Valley Academy @ 3900 Conrad Dr. Spring Valley, CA, 91977. This project is ongoing. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 2. 150 to 200 people per week benefit from this project. The project began in September and is on-going. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? 3. The primary beneficiaries were the children in the La Mesa/Spring Valley School District (LMSVSD) and their families. However, anyone who came for food were given food – families with pre-school children and the elderly. The impact was these families knew they would have food to feed their families. This is an area of low-income families who may not have transportation to go anywhere else, they could walk to this location. In addition to meals (that even children could prepare), we provided such items as cake mix, oil and bags of rice/beans. We have been their food/diaper safety net, 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 4. About 30 Club members participated. Many bought and donated food. At least 3 Rotarians, per week, work at the Distribution site to put food on shelves, fill bags, and distribute food. Food purchases were done weekly and this required purchasing and delivering the food to the distribution site. 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. 5. We worked with the LMSVSD who provided the location for the distribution. They provided advertisement at, at times, donated food. Additionally, we worked with the Spring Valley Community Church who provided some of the diapers. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? none 7. Income
