District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2020-21

Rotary Club: El Camino Real (Oceanside)

Project Title: Operation Hope

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Operation Hope is a temporary shelter for homeless families located in Vista, CA. It is the only shelter of its kind operating in North County that allows families to stay together in a safe, clean, and comfortable environment. It is also unique in that it offers a faith based framework and support system on a temporary basis. Families and their teenage children are given help in getting their education and support for securing gainful employment. Once families feel secure and capable

of fending for themselves, they are encouraged to move out to make room for other families.

Rotary Club of El Camino Real has been providing financial support to Operation Hope for the various services and activities that the Director and staff provide to residents on a daily basis. In addition, on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, the Club provides and serves nutritious meals to the residents. Until recently, a group of 6-8 Club members of RCECR would volunteer to deliver and serve the meals on-site. After serving, Rotarians visit with the Residents and their families. Residents seem to enjoy the social interaction and Rotarians get a better understanding of the families. Unfortunately, this year, due to the Pandemic, the in-person, on-site serving was halted. However, the Club continued to purchase and deliver the meals each month. The Club also makes an effort to provide extra special meals during holidays such as, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

2. How many people benefited from this project? approximately 30-40 adults and children

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Shelter residents and their families. Being fed nutritious meals saved them money and time because they do not have to purchase groceries or cook. It is always gratifying to see how appreciative the adults, teens, and young children are for the good meals. Many often commented on how tasty a particular food item was and that they really enjoyed the meal.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 6-8 Club members participate on a rotating basis

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

1.Club members purchase food and drinks (main dish, salad, fruit/dessert and drinks/milk)for which

they are reimbursed from the Club Foundation account.

2.Members take the food items to the facility, set it up and serve the meals. In addition, they join

residents and engage in conversations with the residents, providing support and encouragement.

For example, one time I had discussions with one young single mother about her academic and

employment plans .

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?
