District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2020-21

Rotary Club: Encinitas Coastal

Project Title: Empowering Trafficking Victims

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Linda Kitchens, our Community Service co-chair delivered the $7,000 check for Project LIFE to North County Lifeline Executive Director, Don Stump at his office on Monday, October 12th. A photo of the award event is included under the "Finance" tab, along with a close-up of the check.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Project LIFE has aided 353 human trafficking victims this year.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The victims are generally young people rescued from abusive environments where they were exploited for sex, labor and/or domestic servitude. In the midst of our pandemic crisis, and with a dearth of available jobs, victims are in need of more long-term support. Project LIFE is working with partners to provide shelters, counselling, education and training.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? All the members of the Encinitas Coastal Rotary have been involved.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

On Tuesday, October 13th, Executive Director, Don Stump, presented a seminar via Zoom on the role of North County Lifeline, law enforcement officials and many other partner organizations in rescuing and empowering the victims of this modern form of slavery. President Karen Heffron is preparing a report on the meeting for club members who were not present. The Community Service Co-chairs, Linda Kitchens and Larry Gonzales, are developing a "hands on" project to collect much-needed supplies, toiletries and clothing for the survivors as they work there way through the difficult recovery process. Eighteen members of the committee will spearhead the effort to involve the entire club in gathering listed items.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The Community Resource Center played a critical role in helping us find the best way to attack the scourge of human trafficking in our area. For survivors who are further along in the recovery process, CRC often provides job training and guidance to help victims re-enter society at a more secure level and learn to thrive.
