District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2020-21

Rotary Club: Chula Vista

Project Title: College Scholarships

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The mission of the Rotary Club of Chula Vista Scholarship Program is to promote the ideals of Rotary by recognizing students' outstanding service to their school and community and their superior academic achievement.

The program has 3 objectives: 1. To motivate students in local high schools to experience the value of providing service to their schools and community and to reward some of those who compile outstanding service records. 2. To provide motivation for students in local high schools to reach their potential in academic achievement and to reward some of those who are most successful. 3. To reward students who exhibit highest potential for success in post-high school education and for making future significant contributions to society.

Rotary Club of Chula Vista Scholarships are made available to graduating seniors at five high schools in the Chula Vista area: Castle Park High School, Chula Vista High School, Hilltop High School, Olympian High School, and Otay Ranch High School. Applicants must be planning to attend a 2-year or 4-year college in the fall.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 10 graduating high school seniors.

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

10 graduating high school students from the Sweetwater School District each received $1,000 scholarships to support their pursuit of post-secondary education. Students were selected based upon academic performance, service to others, co-curricular activities, and financial need. Generally, students have an extraordinary financial need or family hardship that makes the pursuit of post-secondary education challenging. Many are first generation college/university students.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 68 members

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

All club members contributed funds to the scholarship through contributions to the club's foundation.

A scholarship committee worked with guidance counselors at designated high schools to advertise, solicit, distribute and receive scholarship applications.

The committee chair worked with the club webmaster to post scholarship information, criteria, and an application tool on the club's website.

The committee met as a body with guidance counselors to review, evaluate, and rank applications before voting on final scholarship recipients.

The Treasurer disbursed written checks to scholarship recipients, and the they and their parents were recognized at the club's June 11, 2021, meeting, where recipients spoke about their future education plans.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

AT&T this year contributed $2,000 to the Chula Vista Rotary Foundation in support of the club's scholarship program.
