Rotary Club: San Marcos Project Title: Literacy Project 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The Rotary Club of San Marcos helps to promote literacy by spending time reading to children. The Club used the funds to purchase a new book for each first grade student in the six, Title 1 schools in the San Marcos Unified School District. This book was then distributed to each student to keep. The project took place in San Marcos, between March 22-May 7. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 675 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? The San Marcos Unified School District has six Title 1 schools, those with a student base where at least 40% come from low-income families, thus qualifying the children to receive free or reduced cost lunches. The 650 students and their teachers were the beneficiaries. For many of the students, this is the first new book they have ever had! The impact was meaningful and the humanitarian need was met by Rotarians showing the importance of reading, spending time reading to others and doing something inspiring for those children. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 18 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Project chair ordered the 650 books and club members gathered and pasted Rotary Club of San Marcos stickers inside each book. Books were then counted and sorted into boxes and delivered to the respective schools. Teams of two Rotarians were unable to visit each classroom this year due to COVID however, they were able to Zoom with the classes, tell the students about Rotary and show the illustrations while reading the book to them that way. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? The book title is selected with assistance from the San Marcos Unified School District. Their Administrative staff also surveyed the teachers to find out if this project could be implemented this year. After receiving the positive responses, they provided our club with teacher contact information for each school. 7. Income
