District Grant Final Report

District 5010

2021-22

Rotary Club: Anchorage International

Project Title: Fun-on-the-Run Foster Children

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

With the Grant, our club purchased enough small backpacs and toys to outfit 400 units with up to 8 toys in each backpac. These are items requested by foster parents to stimulate communication between the restricted parent and their child. In June of 2022, we delivered all 400 units to Beacon Hill Child Development. This organization is further assisting our club to distribute these resources to other like organizations in South Central Alaska.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Several hundred families

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Children in foster care, or families in crisis situations, many times need coordinated activities, either while the parent is being helped, or to foster conversation between the parent and the child, or a caregiver and a child. These backpacs give the agent overseeing the situation, a ready made grouping of age appropriate activities to be used in the care of the child, who can then take these items home with them, instead of these devices needing to remain in the care facility. This transfer of ownership to the child is beneficial in a highly stressful situation.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 25

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

1. Assisted in collecting and delivering the 400 sets of toys and backpacs to a central facility for processing.

2. Assembled all of the toys and backpacs together into individual units.

3. Delivered these units to the care facility and toured the facility with the Executive Director.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Beacon Hill will distribute these units to children and families in their care, and to other like facilities within a 300 mile range for their use as well.
