District Grant Final Report

District 5010

2021-22

Rotary Club: Homer-Kachemak Bay

Project Title: Parks/Trails Improvements

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

We made several improvements to Ben Walters Park on Beluga Lake. Rotarians made and painted benches and picnic tables for this park, as well as cleared brush and worked to clean up this park. We also installed a fire ring, put in climbing boulders, and made a "yellow brick road." Project activities started in the winter of 2021-22 and continued through the spring and summer of 2022.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Difficult to quantify, but without exaggeration, hundreds

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries were Homer residents, as well as visitors. They were impacted because the work done by Rotary made the park more usable and safer. The humanitarian need that was met was improving the health of the community by making improvements to a wonderful outdoor space that will allow more people of all ages to use the park. An economic development need also was met because research shows that healthy outdoor spaces attract people to live and work in a community. Because the park is a community gathering place, the improvements also contribute to building peace and goodwill among Homer residents and visitors. We checked off four areas of focus when we applied for this grant because we believe the outdoors provides a perfect setting for peace building and conflict prevention; we know the outdoors is important to disease prevention, as well as maternal and child health; and well-cared for parks and outdoor spaces are a key ingredient to community economic development, used year-round by residents and visitors.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? At least a dozen

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

First, several Rotarians met with city officials in below freezing temps at the park to discuss how best to improve the park. Second, Rotarians were involved in looking through lots of material to decide how best to use our financial resources and decided building things like picnic tables and benches would be better than buying them. After materials were purchased, Rotarians got busy sawing, painting and assembling the picnic tables and benches, placing them at the park, and doing other improvements.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The city of Homer Parks and Public Works departments were involved. The city owns the park, so Rotary and the city work together to make sure we are on the same page as far as improvements go. The city also provided space and equipment for Rotary to saw, paint and assemble; they also provided their expertise.
