Rotary Club: Anchorage International Project Title: Clare House 'Play to Learn' 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? 250 "to go" backpacks were designed, manufactured and purchased. Books, learning games and toys, stress relief items, puzzles, crayons and coloring books, tooth brushes and toothpaste along with blankets were packed into the travel backpacks. Supplies were stored by Rotarian Tim Ellis, Rotarian Mark Cosby and Rotarian Kevin Fimon. An assembly line packing activity took place at the home of Mark Cosby. Blankets from Rotarian Angela Rush came from AK Child & Family associates and Rotarian Kevin Fimon purchased Tom's healthy toothpaste and completed the backpacks at his home before delivering to Clare House facility. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 250 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Beneficiaries are the mothers and children who transition through Clare House living facility. Beneficiaries are provided learning supplies, books, balls and toys while they are living in Clare House and then are provided a backpack of those same items along with a blanket and some personal care items when they are fortunate enough to move on into more permanent housing. Basic Education and Literacy, Economic & Community Development along with Maternal and Child Health are Areas of Focus. Humanitarian needs of clothing, blankets, books, puzzles, toys, stress relief items and personal care items along with a nice backpack provide a consistent learning and living pattern to the children. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 21 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Selected, priced, ordered and purchased various books, games, puzzles, blankets and personal care items. Designed an Anchorage International Rotary Club backpack with draw strings for on the back wearing. Two Rotary members received and stored the inventory of items until packing of the backpacks. 16 Rotary Members and a few of their family performed an assembly line packing party, where the backpacks were filled with a consistent supply of the items and the completed backpacks were boxed for transport and delivery. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Three staff members from Clare House were also involved in the delivery, receipt and storage of backpacks at Clare House and some backpacks were also delivered to children and families who had just recently moved from the facility into more permanent housing. 7.
