Rotary Club: Vista Project Title: Reading is Fun Literacy Projec 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Ordinarily this project involves club members reading in person in each first grade class in the Vista Unified School District and giving each student their very own copy of the book to take home and share with their families. This tradition was not possible the past two years because of restrictive COVID protocols in the school district. However we persisted and adapted. This year we held out as long as possible hoping to be able to do in-person reading. In the end this was not feasible. Through the coordination of the two club members associated with the Vista Teachers' Association we will once again, as was done last year, record club members reading the books. These videos will be shown to classes by the teachers, who will distribute the books to students. The books have been purchased and have arrived. We are preparing them, putting a Rotary Club of Vista sticker in each book, and the recording, presentation and distribution process will be completed by mid-May. Pictures of the books are included as photos as a part of this report. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Approximately 1,402 first grade students in 62 classrooms throughout the district receive books. 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? All first grade students in VUSD are impacted by this project. They each receive their very own copy of the book that is read, to take home and share with parents and siblings. For many of the students this is the first book that they have personally owned. Early literacy is a primary goal of the Vista Unified School District and this project contributes to enhancing students' interest and skill development in reading. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Approximately 12 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. 1) Two club members coordinated the entire project including choosing and ordering books, coordinating with schools, arranging for club members to make reading videos, communicating with teachers regarding project implementation, and coordinating delivery of books to schools. 2) Two club members handled all administrative functions associated with grant administration and funding. 3) Several club members are in the process of making book reading videos to be presented in the first grade classrooms. 4) Several club members will assist in delivering books to schools. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? Vista Unified School District assisted in planning and implementation of the project. Vista Teachers Association provided major logistical support and because book costs increased over prior years, they also provided funding for shipment of the books. 7. Income
