District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2021-22

Rotary Club: San Diego

Project Title: Transportation for Hospital

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The grant provided $45,000 to purchase a Toyota truck for the Teresa Ayiko International Hospital in Atiak, northern Uganda. The 100,000 square foot hospital has been open and operational since September 2021. The truck was purchased in March 2022, providing the hospital with a second dedicated vehicle (previously, it only had the one ambulance) to transport hospital supplies and personnel, as the ambulance is the sole means of patient transportation.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Beneficiaries of this project are 100,000 patients expected to be served from the local community plus additional patients from the over one million refugees from South Sudan that are in northern Uganda

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Beneficiaries of this project are 100,000 patients expected to be served from the local community plus additional patients from the over one million refugees from South Sudan that are in northern Uganda. This number is expected to increase over the lifetime of the vehicle. One of the major challenges of providing quality healthcare in Atiak is the lack of reliable transportation. The roads are rough and the most common type of transportation, aside from walking, is by motorbike. The pickup truck streamline the transportation of goods and personnel so that the ambulance can focus on patients.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Between the Gulu and San Diego clubs, about 10 Rotarians had direct participation. Additional Rotarians indirectly participated through their work with the hospital.

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Both the international and local club members met to assess the need for the truck as well as to determine that funding the vehicle would be the best use of their time and resources. The local Rotarians priced the vehicle at various dealerships to find the most affordable and reliable pickup. They then ordered the selected truck, picked it up, added the Teresa Ayiko International Hospital logo to the vehicle (see attached photos), and delivered it to the hospital.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The hospital is owned by the Alliance for African Assistance-Uganda, a Ugandan non-profit organization with strong ties to the Atiak Community and Rotary. The Alliance did not play a direct role in the grant, however, it was indirectly involved through its oversight of the hospital.
