Project Title: Youth & Community Projects


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

We completed a variety of projects including a school supply project, 2- holiday food distribution, scholarship sponsorship, sponsored after school classes for students in STEM program. The projects took place at Encanto Elementary School, Jackie Robinson YMCA, EIS Institute and other locations throughout the Southeast San Diego community from August 2021-December 2021..

2. How many people benefited from this project? Approx. 375

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

250 Elementary & Middle school student’s impacted by the pandemic and with limited resources received backpacks with school supplies. 35 teachers, 100 struggling low-income families received holiday food boxes. Sponsored holiday meals for 5 Second Chance Group Homes (approx. 40 people), 1-sponsorship for Earl B. Gilliam Scholarship-students of color studying law and social justice and 1 summer scholarship for EIS. Projects addressed needs related to education, literacy and focused on community.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 13

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Collected, sorted & packed school supplies and participated in distribution. Sorted, packed & delivered food boxes to more than 100 families.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Jackie Robinson YMCA (JRYMCA) organized and provided facility to pack and distribute school supplies. Western Service Workers vetted families’ receiving the food baskets and organized the distribution at their facility
