District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2021-22

Rotary Club: La Mesa

Project Title: Mental Health

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The Access for Success program is designed to identify children and adults with children in the home who would benefit from access to mental health professionals but have limited access. The limited access is often a result of lack of financial resources, and/or the ability to find a mental health professional with an available appointment within a short period of time.

The project provided funding for clients to see a mental health professional of their choice and the project will cover at least a portion of the costs if needed. Alternatively, the project could cover the copay if the client could not afford the copay through their insurance. The project also identified mental health professionals that would create availability in their schedules to see clients within a day or two of the need, as well as on an ongoing basis if needed.

In partnership with City Hope, our City Hope volunteers on school campuses, as well as other community members were able to help identify the individuals to be assisted. Appointments were scheduled at times convenient

2. How many people benefited from this project? 16

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

We have heard amazing reports regarding the impact of this project. While we cannot obtain information regarding private counseling sessions, we have heard from the clients, schools, and family members that the benefits of access to mental health are evident in the clients, and also bringing benefits to the families and even the school community. There are many beneficiaries when we focus on mental health and being partnered with individuals to grow in their mental wellness. Covid has highlighted the percentage of the population experiencing some level of struggle regarding mental wellness. Direct services to people navigating this challenge satisfies a significant humanitarian need.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 16

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians make some of our best partners and volunteers. City Hope is fortunate to have 4 Rotarians who serve as City Hope Volunteers. These volunteers work on campuses with students, and are wonderful additions to this project. These rotarians have responded to urgent traumatic situations impacting students and have helped to navigate the aftermath of the trauma with them. They have met regularly with students in a crisis lifestyle that need someone outside of their family to help process their experiences and situations. Our Rotarian volunteers help identify students that need additional support.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?
