District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2021-22

Rotary Club: El Cajon

Project Title: Rotary Academy Power Hour

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Since 1961, the goal of the Boys & Girls Clubs of East County has been to provide a safe haven for children 6-18 every day after school and during the summer months. Our six facilities in the communities of Lakeside, El Cajon, La Mesa, and Santee are fully staffed and equipped to provide more than 2,500 children with a safe, active and fun place to stay, play and learn until it's time to go home. No child is denied access to the Clubs due to the inability to pay the dues, and scholarships are offered to families in need of financial assistance. In order to keep membership dues low, they need the support of our community and beyond.

The Rotarian Academy Project provides children with the ability to acquire a better education.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Around 2500

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The Academy Clubhouse stays open from 2:00-6 PM with mentors that encourage and assist in homework and study. They also track student progress in the "Power Hour" and "Rapid Reader" programs. The programs have shown great success and nearly 100% of their members benefit from this program. This will lead to lifetime of valuable reading and comprehension skills.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 2 Rotarians

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

The Rotarians assisted in the learning curriculum. They also assisted in the class development.
