Rotary Club: Del Mar Project Title: Peanut Butter for Food Bank 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? Del Mar Rotary Delivers the Peanut Butter In a normal year, the San Diego Food Bank serves about 10% of San Diego residents who are in need of food supplies. Before Covid, the Food Bank served about 300,000 people a month. Since Covid, the level of families who are food insecure and in need has increased dramatically, and the Food Bank now serves about 600,000 people monthly through its various partnerships with community groups. Last year the Rotary Club of Del Mar raised money for the Food Bank and presented a check in December. When asked what the Food Bank needed besides money, food bank officials responded with a request for peanut butter. According to Casey Castillo, Interim CEO, much of the food the Food Bank obtains comes in large quantities, which are then broken down and sized into individual sized meals. This is very cost efficient and lets the Food Bank provide low-cost food supplies. But peanut butter typically is only sold in prepackaged jars and is considered too expensive for the Food Bank to purchase. Yet peanut butter is a good source of nutrition and very popular with area families. “Thank you to the Del Mar Rotary Club for supporting the San Diego Food Bank’s mission to end hunger in our community with this generous donation of shelf-stable peanut butter,†said Interim CEO of the San Diego Food Bank, Casey Castillo. “Peanut butter is one of the Food Bank’s most needed donation items, because it is rich in protein and has a long shelf-life. Plus, it can be expensive for the Food Bank to purchase.†Under the leadership of Rotary’s co-presidents, Suzy and Karl Wagner, the Club mounted a campaign to raise funds and procure peanut butter for the Food Bank. Scott MacDonald, representing the Community Service Committee, directed the campaign. As a result, one pallet of 18 oz jars of peanut butter or 1,620 jars was acquired by the Club and delivered to the Food Bank August 17.
