Rotary Club: Rancho Bernardo Sunrise (San Diego) Project Title: Oasis Haven scholarships 2021 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? In 2021 Oasis Haven formally stared a homeschool centre on site. The purpose of this was twofold. During 2020 our children were homeschooled for 6 months due to COVID 19. For the younger children in pre-school this really meant that they just stayed at home. Additionally huge gaps were identified for 5 of our older children. The reality is that those gaps will not be closed without individual attention and so a homeschool was started employing one teacher for the younger children and making use of our social worker to teach the older ones. The curriculum was obtained through a homeschool education centre called Clonard which has 20 years of experience in homeschooling. Homeschooling our children has also meant that they have not had any down time during COVID 19 peaks. 2. How many people benefited from this project? 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? All 10 children who were homeschooled in 2021 improved in their academic abilities over the year. The pre-school children were able to identify colours, shapes and animals as well as count in English, Afrikaans, Zulu and French at the end of the year. They also could sing the South African National Anthem which is in 4 languages. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? RB Sunrise raised the necessary monies 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Laura Mello sits on their board of directors, and helps make important decisions for the children involved 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?
