Project Title: Anchorage Senior Center Garden


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The Anchorage Senior Activities Center Community Garden Project was completed with the following steps:

1. Community Garden Layout & Walk-through Planning Meeting, 4/26/23

2. Community Garden Project Design Layout Finalization Meeting. 9/12/23

3. Cleared the designated area and cut the trees

4. Anchorage Senior Center Community Garden Box Design & Build-out of 22x boxes.10/8/23

5. ASAC Garden box dirt fill completion 10/17/22

6. Install metal fence posts. 6/15/23

7. Installed fencing wire, 2x4 boards, and wooden latticework. 6/19/23

8. Installed benches and signage.6/27/23

Each volunteer was between 3-5 hours per person, with between 6-12 people per day on-site volunteering. In total there was somewhere between a 40-60 hours of total work when accounting for everyone's time.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 100+ (all the current & future members of the Anchorage Senior Activities Center)

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries are the senior citizen members of the Anchorage Senior Activities Center, as they now have a nice, clean, accessible, safe, and secure location to get together and work on their gardening skills. Of the seven pillars of Rotary Focus, I would say that this project definitely touched on Community Economic Development.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? approximately 30-40 different Rotarians at least

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Cleared trees

Cut beams and built garden boxes

Filled boxes with soil

Pounded fence posts

Erected fencing

Installed benches & signage

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The Anchorage Senior Activities Center also contributed financially by providing pizza and soft drinks for the volunteers for each workday and a $5000 check contribution towards the project.
