Project Title: Settlers Cove Picnic Shelter


Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The project was completed on July 1st, 2023. Our club built a picnic shelter and settlers cove for recreational purposes. there was an old picnic shelter that was in place before but was demolished due to its age. we started the project in the last week of May due to weather issues.

2. How many people benefited from this project? this site is used by many people in the community

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

the greater ketchikan community was the beneficiaries of the project. settlers cove beach and this facility is used by many people including: entertainment venus likes weddings and educational outings such as beach day through the local schools. This project fills the roll of humanitarian need by providing increased recreational opportunities to the community.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 12

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

1. one rotarian created the blue print for the project and directed other members on how to set up the structure. they acted as the "foremen" or "project manager" of the project and made sure building specifications were being completed correctly.

2. one rotarian had significant experience building roofs. they assisted on how to properly build a roof, prep the roof with tar paper, and properly apply the roofing material to ensure no water leakage. their experience was invaluable as the roof was the largest and most difficult part of the project.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

We had two organizations involved in the project: Alaska State Park's, and the Sierra Club. the Alaska State Parks owns the land that the settlers cove picnic shelter is located on. they assisted with blueprint specifications, site design, site set up/tear down, and park building code regulations.

The Sierra Club assisted mostly with labor and moving material down to the project site. they moved all lumber and roofing material to the site. Their role was strictly workforce oriented and provided lots of laborers for the grunt work.
