Rotary Club: Homer-Kachemak Bay Project Title: Homer Parks Improvement 1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place? The Rotary Club of Homer-Kachemak Bay used DDF 4218 to significantly improve the Ben Walters appearance and community usability through the construction of a "Yellow Brick Road" to follow between park apparatus, and the purchase of a 5' heavy wave slide. The slide will be installed in cooperation with the City of Homer Parks & Recreation Dept. ensuring the equipment and installation meet all health and safety requirements. Grant money was used to by pavers which were installed using Club sweat equity. In partnership with the City of Homer, grant funds were expended to purchase recreation equipment for Bayview Park which is undergoing redesign and renovation. 2. How many people benefited from this project? Parks are available to families and individuals of Homer AK, a city of 5719 (2021) 3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met? Outdoor recreational spaces are essential to our mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. The Rotary Club of Homer-Kachemak Bay has teamed with the City of Homer to improve its parks and recreational spaces. Ben Walters park is adjacent to a McDonalds and close to the main business district. It also abuts the Beluga Lake Float Plane base. Its appearance and availability to recreation and natural beauty make it a valuable community asset. Bayview Park is located in a residential area and is mainly used by families with young children. Due to safety concerns old recreational equipment had to be removed. The Club is partnering with the City of Homer in supporting the redesign and reequipping of the critical city recreational area. Success of both projects directly impacts the quality of life of resident of Homer and the surrounding area. 4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Twenty-two 5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project. Installation of the Yellow Brick Road. Pavers were painted and installed throughout Ben Walters Park connecting picnic and recreation areas. Installation was accomplished with Rotarian sweat equity. Clearing of brush and undergrowth. Rotarians employing brush clearing tools maintained the beauty of the Park and access to the Rotary observation benches on the Beluga Lake Float Plane Base. 6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role? The Rotary Club of Homer-Kachemak Bay is a full-partner with the City of Homer Parks & Recreation Department in these endeavors. 7.
