Project Title: Clare House Play Area Shed

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Clare House Play Area Shed

District 5010 Grant P-4220

Clare House is a program of Catholic Social Services that provides emergency shelter services for moms and their children. The staff at Clare House indicated an outdoor storage shed would be a valuable asset to their campus. It would house bikes and outdoor play toys for the residents, as well as being a secure location to store gardening tools for community volunteers who assist in maintaining the Clare House garden/play area. This grant provided funding for the shed and its placement at Clare House.

When preparing the district grant proposal, AIRC researched options for sheds and transportation of the shed to the Clare House campus. At that time, it was determined that we could support our local King Tech High School by purchasing one of the sheds built by their carpentry students.

The initial quote for the shed to be transported from King Tech High School to Clare House, came from a local towing company. Unfortunately, by the time the grant funds were available, the towing company quit moving pre-made sheds due to liability issues. Several other towing companies were contacted as well, and none of them would move the shed.

AIRC then reached out to a construction company to ask for guidance. In October 2022, Central Environmental, Inc. agreed to move the shed and provided the transportation as an in-kind donation. That left $800 available in the grant funds that were initially dedicated to transportation.

The extra funds were then used to buy garden tools and play equipment. The garden tools will be used by community volunteers, including Rotary members and the Wilson Albers Company staff, who maintain the garden area throughout the summer. The play equipment includes scooters and helmets, as requested by Clare House staff. All items are currently being stored in the new shed.

Thank you to District 5010 for the opportunity to support Clare House staff and to bring joy to families who are transitioning to a more stable living situation.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Number of families range from 20-50 at any time

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Families entering Clare House are coming from compromised situations. They are sleeping in vehicles or on the street with nowhere else to go. Seeking refuge at Clare House provides these families with the basic necessities: safe environment, warm shelter, food/water and other needs for both moms and their children.

Several years ago, a local landscape architect company, Corvus Design, provided pro-bono design and project management for installation of a fenced in play area and garden for the residents of Clare House. The shed and equipment that was purchased by this district grant continues to support the play area/garden. This area is used by Clare House families as a safe environment to play and relax while recovering from challenging living conditions and transitioning to permanent stability.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 1

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

A member of Anchorage International Rotary Club (AIRC) who was volunteering to clean up and maintain the play area/garden found there was a need for a shed to store tools for volunteers and toys & play equipment for residents. This member had recently heard about district grants and decided to pursue one with the support of AIRC.

The individual worked with with Clare House & Catholic Social Services to research sheds and potential locations for a shed on the Clare House Campus. She partnered with a local construction company to get the shed moved to the campus, supervising that move. She also purchased tools and play equipment with the funds that were originally dedicated to transporting the shed, and delivered all equipment to Clare House.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Special thanks definitely needs to go to Central Environmental, Inc (CEI). After being consulted on possible options for moving the shed, the owner stepped in and provided a crew and large equipment to move the shed (see photos). CEI also provided ground materials for the shed to sit on. These supplies and services were generously donated to the project.
