District 5340

2022-23

Rotary Club: E-Club of San Diego Global

Project Title: College Scholorships

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Please note: In the Description part of the document, there are many files marked "monograms (MoneyGrams) that contain all receipts for the project in Guatemala. Funds were sent by MoneyGram from Maureen Duncan to Lilian Gonzalez, project manager in Guatemala for tuition, books, internet, and transportation. The expenses list for this is file "Grant Expenses: 22-23" ". The tally is as bit over the $5000 because many people sent money for disaster relief etc as part of the MoneyGrams.

The document marked "3rd Year !st Semester subjects" lists the courses these 7 students are taking in college, thanks to this grant.

This grant has made possible a university education for seven students. Seven Guatemalan university students living in Santa Lucia/Antigua have completed their college year.Five are now in their third year, one in his second and one completing her fifth year in social work. I have attached their classes they are taking. They also have received stellar grades this past year, overcoming such adversity such as domestic violence, severe poverty, family illness and two students got Covid.

These students are not only the first in their families to attend college, but also the first to attend high school. This is very meaningful for their communities as they will be the leaders in education, economics and politics where they live.

Besides scholarship money, other contributors support then all taking a class call E4CC English for Call Centers. where they are learning English in an intense online class. Many of them are almost ready to apply to a call center for work.

Reyna has to take him to the dialysis center and back. This is very stressful for the family and Reyna. in particular. We contributed our own money for the dialysis appointments. Her mother has no skill she can provide for the family economic and the family is barely getting by. Reyna he is an A student. She has 2 siblings - an older sister who works and helps maintain the family and a little brother.

Despite emotional problems she has persisted in her studies with a B average and is halfway toward a degree in Business Administration.

He is in his second year of college studying Computer Engineering receiving all As. He lives alone and has to manage his own health and well being, and tough math and computer classes. He knows if he finishes college he will be able to help his impoverished family. He also helps to work at a Call Center soon as his classes at E4CC have greatly improved his English (which is his third language.

Victoria, a Business Administration major, is another A student. This past fall 2022 she and her family fell on extremely hard times. Both her mother and father were bedridden and care of the and her younger siblings fell on her. Then the family was evicted since no one could pay the rent. They were on the street during Christmas time. Caring Rotarians and others came to their rescue so they could get into a shelter with medicine and food. Then Victoria came down with Covid and was not going to continue at the university this semester because she did not have internet access. The caregivers once again provided means for Victoria to continue her studies.

This grant has provided her tuition and books and she will be awarded her degree in May of this year 2023, with an A average.
