District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2022-23

Rotary Club: Point Loma (San Diego)

Project Title: Safe Water Stations for Zambia

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Point Loma Rotary and Nkwazi Rotary evaluated various water filtration system technologies to find the best fit to address the needs of the Matero community of Lusaka, Zambia. Nkwazi Rotary contracted with a local vendor to design and build metal stands based on schematics provided by the Point Loma Rotary. Matero Care Center personnel assembled water filtration systems comprised of UZIMA UZ-2 water filters and the metal stands. 60 families in the Matero neighborhood of Lusaka, Zambia were trained on the use of the water filtration systems and each family received a system to install in their home.

2. How many people benefited from this project? Sixty families equating to approximately 420 people

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Drinking water contamination contributes to hospital cases and death in Zambia. Homes that have access to water, do not have clean water as most pipes are broken resulting in unsafe water. Over 60% of households have chronic diarrheal diseases if the water is not chlorinated or boiled before consumption. The families who received training and water filtration systems through this project report:

1. It is easy to use

2. The water is clean and the training given on how to back flash the filter has been helpful as they have been back flashing the filters.

3. There has been less diarrhoeal diseases as they now drink clean water.

4. The water is also used for cooking meals as it is clean.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? Five

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Two Rotarians from Point Loma provided water system technical assistance, ordered hardware and provided financial management and tracking. Three Rotarians from the Nkwazi Rotary oversaw local contractors, inspected hardware, coordinated training at the Matero Care Center, managed local budget, and reported results.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

The Power of Love Foundation provided labor for training. The Matero Care Center provided storage, tracked shipments, evaluated the prototype system and provided a facility for training. An MOU was established detailing the responsiblities of all participating organizations.
