District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2022-23

Rotary Club: Chula Vista

Project Title: Bless These Hands

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

The project consisted of purchasing two industrial sewing machines for Afghan refugees who are living in El Cajon in order to help them start their tailoring businesses.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 22

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

Two Afghan refugees families were the beneficiaries from this project. One family has seven children and another family has four children. One of the families hired another Afghan refugee to be his assistant. That refugee now employed is able to provide for his family of five.

The benefit extended beyond the families. Afghan refugees in the community have benefited from the project. There was a lack of modest women clothing. Importing clothing articles is expensive and beyond their means. Now, Afghan refugee women are ordering their dresses from these families. Afghan refugee men are also ordering traditional men clothing with beautiful embroidery.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project?

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Rotarians actively participated. One of the Rotarians helped refugees create business plans. A Rotarian collected bales of fabric to help them get started and another used his truck to move the sewing machines. Perhaps the most helpful assistance refugees received was when one Rotarian ordered products from them which were sold at couple of events to help advocate for refugees and spread the word about their businesses.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Amna Sanctuary was involved as partner. The organization received the check from Chula Vista Rotary and assisted refugees in finding the appropriate sewing machines. Amna Sanctuary connected members of Chula Vista Rotary with refugees and suggested the volunteer opportunities to Rotarians.

Amna Sanctuary was able to collect donations to cover the additional $340.
