District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2022-23

Rotary Club: Borrego Springs

Project Title: Opportunities for Students

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

A total of 19 high school students finished two one-semester courses in the field of hospitality and received certificates for Certified Hosting and Certified Guiding through the NAI (National Association of Interpretation). These certificates will open career doors for these students in the field of Interpretation, especially in Borrego Springs, the gateway to the Anza Borrego Desert State Park, visited by thousands of tourists every year.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 19 (one extra was used by a student who came late; left early)

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

The beneficiaries are the high school students. In our rural location, a minimum of 1.5 hours from any major city or college, many of our low-income students decide to remain in Borrego Springs after high school. There are very few job opportunities outside of agriculture, waitressing and housekeeping in local hotels. These certificates afford our students career opportunities in the many exciting jobs that support a large tourism industry such as park rangers, park guides and the work in park headquarters.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 4

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

1) Worked closely with the school to set up the CIH and CIG class. Supported the teacher through lesson modeling and discipline assistance.

2) Rotarian business people served as guest speakers in the class, discussing customer service, dealing with difficult customers etc.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

Many organizations in our town participated by receiving students as visitors and demonstrating how to deliver customer service: Chamber of Commerce, the Anza Borrego Desert Natural History Association, La Casa del Zorro Resort.

The Anza Borrego Park took students on field trips to learn about this special place. Many of our students had no idea about why our town is so special to the world.
